Bahu Manarathe

It is not common that I write song lyrics, actually, this is my first time. Two reasons: I am in love with this song and I did not find the lyrics online even after searching a lot. So here it goes:

Bahu Manaratha
Movie: Memories in March
Music Director: Debajyoti Mishra
Singer: Subhomita Banerjee
Lyrics: Rituparno Ghosh

Bahu manorathe saaju avisaare pahlu suneel besh
Kajar nayaane salaaj bayane kusume sajanu kesh
Sakhi hum, mohan avisaare jaaon
Bolo hum, etath sukh kahan paaon

Jamunar pare, gahana aandhare, ghana nipaban maajhe
Piya setha more bedana katare mohe laagi baithi aache
Sakhi hum, mohan avisaare jaaon
Bolo hum, etath sukh kahan paaon

Sakhi chira abhagini hum
Baithe ekakini pohanu rajani tobu naa aailo shyam
Sakhi chira abhagini hum

Krishna kajal pighal sajal nayaner nir dhare
Eka khina patha britha manaratha bifala avisaare
Sakhi hum, kabhu naa avisaare jaaon
Dukh laaj etath sah nahi paahon

Britha manorathe saaju avisaare pahlu suneel besh
Kajar nayaane salaaj bayane kusume sajanu kesh
Fir aaj yun, mohan avisaare jaaon
Sakhi bol etath dukh kahan paaon

A rough translation would be (I am not a poet, so please bear with the rhythm):

With a lot of hope, I dress-up, blue dress,
kohl in eyes, painted lips, flowers in hair …
I am going to meet Mohan,
where will I get such happiness …

On the banks of the Yamuna, amidst the dark and dense forest …
My love waits writhing in pain, for me …
I am going to meet Mohan, where will I get such happiness …

I am very unlucky …
I sat alone for the whole night, yet Shyam hasn’t come
I am really unlucky …

The black kohl is flowing down along with the tears …
Due to this thin little chance but failed meeting …
I will never go to meet …
I can’t bear this sorrow and shame …

Without any hope, I dress-up, blue dress,
kohl in eyes, painted lips, flowers in hair …
And again I am going to meet Mohan,
Where will I get such pain …

Lovely lyrics, great music and sweetest voice; fell in love with this song the first time I heard it on TV.

PS: Mohan and Shyam are other names of Krishna (which also means black/dark). The other songs of this movie are also nice, do listen to them J

Very nice song. Thanks for translation. Is the original text in Bangla or someother language?

Awesome rendition. One of my favourite song, with great music, native lyrics and beautiful voice...

For the people who are reading this blog, Lord Krishna's other name is Mohan (means one who mesmerize, jise dekh kar hum mohit ho jate hai). Lala was Krishna's childhood name, all gopis, gopas and elders used to call Kanha with love lalla or lala (means pyara).

This poem is by a 14th century Maithili poet Vidyapati and not by Rituparno Ghosh, as mentioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW1XkXErCRU
