Recipe: Kanchkolar Kofta

For those who didn't understand the title, kanchkola is the bengali for raw (green) bananas. So this dish is a kofta made with raw bananas. I do not like to eat the curry that my mom makes with raw bananas and potatoes, called kanchkolar dalna. It tastes like it is for some patient who has suffered for long. But seriously it is the best thing after a bout of diarrhea. So, my mom used to make this kofta which is far better in taste and far more unhealthy, of course, like any good food on this planet. I have also made this many times, but not recently though so no picture. The recipe follows:
Ingredients:
For the kofta
· 3 raw bananas
· 1 large potato
· handful of gram flour (besan)
· 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
· Oil for frying (you will need quite a bit of oil!)
· Salt to taste
· Water to boil
For the gravy
· 1 tablespoon oil
· 1 teaspoon freshly ground Garam masala (cloves, cinnamon, cardamom)
· 2 green chilies
· 1 dry red chili
· 2 cups water for the gravy
· 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, but tastes better)
Procedure:
· Cut and remove the top part and the bottom part of the banana. Cut the banana into 2 inch pieces. Do not peel the skin. Cut the potato also into big pieces.
· Boil the potatoes and bananas along with turmeric powder and salt till tender.
· Remove the potatoes and bananas from water and let cool.
· Peel the skins now and mash them together. You can add some more salt and the besan, so that the consistency is more or less hard, not like a dough though.
· Put sufficient oil in a pan. When the oil is hot, make medium sized balls/koftas of the banana and potato mixture and fry in oil till golden. This will require large amount of oil, so don't panic.
· Keep aside the fried koftas. Keep safe but you can't resist eating 2-3 of them.
· For the gravy, heat 1 teaspoon oil. Put the dry red chili, then put the ground garam masala and the green chilis.
· When the masala is fried, add 2 cups of water carefully. Then add the sugar (optional).
· When the water is hot, but not boiling, put in the koftas carefully. Add some salt if necessary. The water will dry up in minutes, leaving tasty juicy koftas for you.
This is best eaten with hot plain rice. The recipe is purely vegetarian, as in Bengal we consider onions, garlic as non-veg too.
